About the Publication

Trill Mag is a non profit online magazine that allocates to the Gen Z demographic. The magazine consists of articles and artwork surrounding news, entertainment, culture, and other categories of content. As a graphic design intern the task at hand is designing artwork to accompany the articles. The article entitled: Saint Or Satanic: Religious Symbolism Resurfacing In Fashion by Remi Brandli is about the resurgence of religious symbolism in today’s fashion trends by popular music artists.

To depict the artwork for the article the main focus was highlighting the celebrities that are featuring the religious symbols in their press campaigns. Artists like Lil Nas X, Doja Cat, and Cardi B take inspiration from Christian symbolism for their fashion expression. The official image is a collage approach where the three artists are depicted with crucifixes, halos, and any calling to Christian symbols. An ombre of plum to teal is the background followed by an array of crosses to tie it all together. The celebs showcase a variety of fashion choices like halos to represent divinity or pushing barriers of clothing by influencing hairstyles. Inspiration was derived from red carpet looks and campaign photography for different artists. The religious community takes offense towards this means of expression as these symbols go far beyond just a “fashion statement”. As a representation of the Catholic church, nuns are mocked the most in the media more than any other members of the laity and clergy put together. Their uniform is often sexualized and imitated by household fashion brands. The image below is a rebuttal response to the prevalent trend.
